NPS floating recommendations for Ponca:
Very Low: Less than 2.4 ft., Greater than 25 inches airspace
Low: 2.40-2.82 ft., 25-20 inches airspace
Moderate: 2.82-3.65 ft., 20-10 inches airspace
High 3.65-6.00 ft., 10 inches airspace to top of bridge.
Flood stage: Greater than 6 ft. gage height, zero airspace and flow over the bridge.
The Ponca gage is best for float trips in the upper Buffalo: Ponca to Kyles, Steel Creek,
and Erbie.

Note about airspace at the Ponca low water bridge: The airspace beneath the bridge
has been historically used to evaluate floating conditions. The minimum for floating the
upper Buffalo is approximately 25 inches of airspace, roughly equivalent to 2.4 ft gage height.
Beware, even at 2.4 ft, the river is fairly low and you might still drag the bottom of your boat!
If there is no airspace and water is flowing over the bridge, the river is very high and should
only be considered for floating by very experienced paddlers. Always check that the river
is open during flood conditions and be cautious.
